Humility

Living a humble life as Jesus did - Lent 5

Reading - Hebrews 5: 5-10

• Do you know what being big headed means? (Discuss)
• cf: Eddie McGuire from Collingwood Football Team. There are those who believe he is big headed when in fact he has to suffer the tall poppy syndrome (Explain about jealousy)
• In fact, many are just jealous about what he has achieved. As he says, you can take the Broadmeadows man out of Broadmeadows, but you can't take the Broardy out of the man. In other words, we value our roots where we came from.
• It is one thing to know you are good at something (eg. Sport, school work etc). It is another to go around bragging about how good you are.
• Being humble is about knowing you have done well, but not bragging about it so it makes other people second rate.
• In today's story the writer of Hebrews stresses that we should live like example of Jesus who was very humble in everything he did.
• No one likes people who are full of themselves (Explain). If we want to get on in life, we need to understand and practice humility. • After all - we are all equal and valued in the eyes of Jesus.
• God hears Jesus when he called out to him because he knew his Son was a very humble man
• We need to be like Jesus and show we too are humble and not a bragger
• After all, you will get on in life much better is people like you rather than resent you because you are full of yourself (Explain)
