Activity: To make a coss

Preparation: Use a doll pin stand as a pattern and trace circles onto felt—one circle for each child. Cut out circles. Cut purple fabric into 3.75x175-cm) and (7.5x 20cm) strips. Use scissors to cut a blunt point in one end of jumbo craft stick (sketch a). Plug in glue gun out of reach of children.

♦ For swag, use fingers to gather one end of (7.5x20cm) fabric strip. Tie and knot thread around gathers. Cut thread ends. Repeat on other end of fabric. Glue gathered ends of fabric on opposite ends of one regular craft stick (sketch b).
♦ Glue felt circle to bottom of doll pin stand.
♦ With teacher's help, fill doll pin stand hole with hot glue. When glue is partially set, stick cut end of jumbo stick in glue and hold in place until glue sets. (For added strength, add a little more glue where stick and stand meet.)
♦ To make crossbeam, glue craft stick with swag horizontally on front of jumbo stick, (1.9 cm) from top (sketch c). ♦ Glue second regular craft stick behind crossbeam to the back of jumbo stick and gathered ends of fabric swag (sketch d).
♦ To finish banner, fold long edges of remaining fabric strip to the center to hide raw edges. Fold strip in half over one end of swag and cross beam (sketch e). Glue in place. Wrap stemmed flowers around bottom of cross.
