KIDS CHURCH ACTIVITIES – May 2007– September 2007

May 6th (Lee) John 13: 31-35 – Love one another
Activity: To make cut out of people with hands in the air on each side of a heart, These to be joined together and placed in the church narthex as handing decorations during morning tea. Verse 35 is printed on all of the hearts.
Require: Coloured paper, scissors, templates for people and hearts, staples. Texta

May 13th (Helen) John 5: 1-9, Man healed at poolside
Activity: To creates happy and sad faces so when they are turned up the other way it will be happy or sad. Add hair as well so becomes hair or a beard. When children bring their creations into church, Priest squirts them with a water pistol (to create a little levity into things) and to re-inforce the happiness the man at the poolside would have experienced. A game could also be played to see who gets to the water first and if any of the slower ones were helped to get to the finish.
Require: Paper plates, Textas, cotton wool, craft glue, Water pistol or water spray

May 20th (Beth) Ascension theme – Luke 24: 44-53
Activity: To make a hand held look at heaven. A stick is placed through a round piece of card and a figure of Jesus is affixed to the card at the top. Cotton wool is teased out to look like colours and glued to the round card top.
Require: Skewer or Kabab stick, craft glue, card, scissors, cut out of Jesus, masking tape,

May 27th (Andrew) Pentecost - Acts 2: 1-21
Activity: To decorate the church with red balloons and streamers after the peace so they are there for the complete service. A birthday cake to be made before hand and iced. After service children given sparklers as we sing “Happy Birthday to God’s Church”
Activity during service – children to ice pre-made cup cakes and a RED candle to be placed in a few on each plate. Eats table to be decorated in a festive way. To decorate the altar prior to the service.
Require: Red balloons, streamers, serviettes, birthday cake, sparklers, cup cakes, red icing, small candles, Altar decorations

JUNE 3 (Audra) Trinity Sunday
Activity: To make large triangles (A4 size) which are equally divided into other triangles. Side one has photo or magazine cut out of clouds. Could be blue background with cotton balls stretched & glued to look like clouds. In other triangles is written God the Son, God the Father, God the Holy Spirit (Children explained what each part if the trinity is). On reverse side same number of triangles but with the child’s photo in the top, and names or magazine cut-outs to identify three other aspects of the child’s life – They are a son/daughter, friend, brother/sister etc
Require: A4 card with triangles pre-drawn, photos of children individually, Cotton wool, craft glue, glossy magazines, scissors, textas, ribbon, hole punch. Some week before June 3, take photos of possible children who may be there this week in readiness. Also bring along the digital camera and printer for extra children who turn up n the day.

JUNE 10 (Lee) Luke 7: 11-17 – Jesus raises the son of the widow women
Activity: To make a collage of the figures of the story. To make a coffin with figure inside that pops up when coffin lid is opened.
Require: Card, scissors, craft glue, figures prepared for cutting out, textas etc to colour in figures.

JUNE 17 (Helen) Harvest Festival
Activity: To make a banner that will be brought into church after the Kid’s Church segment. All children to assist with adding bits. Veg & fruit cutouts, plus pressed flowers. Congregation to be asked to prepare these some weeks previous in readiness.
Require: Banner paper, Craft glue, scissors, various cutouts of fruit/veg and humans. Slogan to read, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few”

JULY 1 (Andrew) 2 Kings 2: 1-2. 6-14 – Elijah is taken up into heaven
(July is Mission Month – Focus on the Karen Refugees & computer donations)
Activity: To give the idea that Elijah is taken up in a whirlwind. Whirlwind created with Elijah at the top. Whirlwind is self-standing.
Require: A4 card, Spiral design printed on card, Scissors, Figure of Elijah, textas

JULY 8 (Sherene) Luke 10: 1-12 (Jesus sends out the 72)
Admission to Holy Communion
Activity: 72 Bookmarks made with blessings on them for children to give to their family and friends
Require: Card, scissors, craft glue, glitter, scissors that give different types of cut, hole punch, ribbon

JULY 15 (Audra) Luke 10: 25-37 (Parable of the Good Samaritan) – Flannel Graph/Spec Bible Reading
Activity: Photos of refuge camps to be shown to children during the talk, Each child to have their own A4 sheet with sections for them to fill in plus a photo of themselves. Name, age, interests etc and a black section for them to add their own points Eg” We are praying for your safety, We pray you will get enough food, We are thinking of you and wonder how hard it is etc
Require: A4 sheet pre printed with questions to be added plus a photo. This to be collated into a book with special cover and sent to the Refuge camp where the Karen people are and where we have made contact with them.

JULY 22 (Lee) Luke 10: 38-42, We all have gifts (Mary & Martha Story)
Activity: To set up for morning tea with floral arranging, table decorations, making fairy bread, sandwiches, dry biscuits etc for morning tea
Require: Table decorations, flowers and vases, food.

JULY 29 (Helen) Pet Sunday
Activity: Pets brought along to be blessed

AUGUST 5 (Beth) Luke 12: 13-21 (Parable of the rich fool)
Babies & Toddlers Service
Activity: Children given a bag of sweets and dry fruit. These are to be transformed into creatures. They will of course have to share from their lolly bag in doing this. Children to realise that if the sweets were eaten by themselves, then at the end they would have no more. If they shared them, then they would have something far more valuable – Friendships. The sweets made up to be given to anyone in the congregation who may live along saying to them “We want you to know we care about you”
Require: Lolly bags, jube type sweets, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, gift bags

AUGUST 12 (Andrew) Luke 12: 32-34 (Don’t rely on material things)
Activity: To make up a “Real Treasure” book. Children given an A4 sheet with six strips. One cover and five with room for children to add how they plan to give the time to their family. This is time they would normally spend on their game boy or TV etc. This is then stapled together it a book and each page (One per day for five days) is shown to the person. Eg: Reading a story with their younger brother/sister, helping mum with the dishes, cleaning up around the yard etc.
Require: Prepared A4 sheet, scissors, textas, stapler, biros

AUGUST 19 (Sherene)
Ballet Service –choose special readings!
Activity: Focus on Ballet Service. Ribbon sticks made – Blue for boys, pink for girls. These to be used by the children for a special dance put on by the Ballet school.
Require: Thin Dowell sticks with pink or blue ribbon attached. String to tie ribbon on sticks

AUGUST 26 (Joanne) John 10: 22-30 – True Christians hear the voice of Jesus
Activity: Sketch of Jesus with his arms around children. Sign says “Jesus says true Christians are…..” In the space is a pull through with the words - Loving, Caring, Forgiving, Prayerful etc
Require: A4 card with sketch printed on front, slits cut so words can be pulled through and viewed one at a time.

SEPTEMBER 2 (Lee) Luke 14: 7-14 - Father’s Day
Activity: Father’s Day Card. Inside to have a pouch fitted to contain a couple of special biros.
Require: A5 size card, Happy Father’s Day added, Words pre-printed inside “God loves you Dad and so do I – Love ……(Child’s name), scissors, craft glue, biros, glitter, textas, pouch made out of material.

SEPTEMBER 9 (Helen) Luke 14: 25-35 (Cost of being a disciple)
Activity: To stress that giving time to Jesus is what he requires if we claim to love him. To make a special hanging that says, “I like to talk to God”. This to have a make believe phone attached.
Require: A5 size card, cord, disposable cup, textas, punch

SEPTEMBER 16 (Beth) Luke 15: 1-10 (Lost sheep, Lost coin)
Activity: To hide gold wrapped chocolate coins around the property for children to find.
Require: Gold wrapped coins

SEPTEMBER 23 (Andrew) Luke 16: 1-13 (Shrewd manager)
Activity: True/False trivia questions. Leaders make a statement and children have to work out if they are lying or telling the truth. If they get it right, then move one space forward. Winners receive a small gift.
Require: Trivia questions about the faith or general questions, small prizes

SEPTEMBER 30 (Sherene) Luke 16: 19-31 (Some never listen to hear the truth)
Activity: Sheets of things they should do at home each day for the week. If they undertake the activity, they are given an angel to stick on page. If they forget or don’t do activity, they get a pitchfork.
Require: Sheet with activities written on, sheet to be decorated, angel & pitchfork stickers given.
