"The importance of being a Shepherd"

Today's selected readings: – John 10: 1-10

Today we also have a church parade for the Airforce Cadets.

 

Kid's Church talk: -

Youger children

  • Have you ever had to look after a pet? Maybe it is your own, or it may be a friends.
  • What sorts of things did you have to do (or your parents did)
  • When you have a pet there is an expectation to show it love and care
  • Then, the pet will return that love to you with plenty of licks and tail wagging to say thanks
  • In todays story, we read about Jesus as a Shepherd.
  • Do you know what a shepherd does?(Discuss)
  • A shepherd in the days of Jesus too his task very seriously (Explain about the role of a shepherd in Jesus day, and use of staff, laying across in front of the sheepfold door etc)
  • People saw Jesus a little like that. He showed concern for people and cared for them, defended them and stuck up for them against bad people
  • (Explain how Jesus shepherds his people like a shepherd would his sheep)

Older children

As mentioned below, but then to have a quiz about the church, Anzac etc with minties as a reward.

Kids Church Activity:
Older children and the Cadets themselves.
To stress the importance of leadership (Jesus) and the various officers in the cadets Eg: Warrant Officer and their leadership skills. One cadet to come and talk about what the cadets means to him/her and another to talk about the significance of Anzac Day. Mintie game to follow with questions about the church, the readings today and Anzac Day. For the prayers, all young people to be invited to come forward to light a candle in memory of those who fought in the various wars. To have competition (and small prize) for longest torn mintie paper. This to happen during the mintie quiz.

Cadets to bring in their flag and take out at conclusion.

Younger children activity
To make a shepherd cutout and a sheep. Colour or cloth the shepherd and stick cotton wool on the sheep. Place this on one half of an A4 sheet of card. On the other half a cut out of Jesus and all age groups of people around him. The caption down the bottom to read "Jesus is a Good Shepherd to all of us"

What you need to get ready:
Taper candles, sand tray, Large (Anzac" cross,questions, minties & sweets prize for mintie paper tearing.
