Kid's Church talk
* Today we are gong to look at some of the special furniture and items
we use in worship and later on you are going to be able to mold something
similar.
Aumbry-
A safe in the wall of the church where the holy oils and the reserved
sacrament of the Bread and the Wine is kept. This is used to take to people
who are sick at home or in hospital and can't cope with a long service.
A white light normally is above it to remind us of the sacrament inside.
Alms Dish - Originally this was the dish used to collect money
for the poor. Today we place the offerings of the people in it.
Ewer - The jog used at Baptism to fill the font.
Candle - We normally have two of these on the altar (Where the
Holy Communion is consecrated - Made special by God) When alight, they
remind us that we should be lights for Jesus in the world. There are two
to remind us of Jesus Human and Divine sides.
Chalice - The cup used for the Wine during the communion. Normally
a silver cup today, but would have been a pottery one in Jesus day. It
would have been one of the normal vessels people drank from.
Font - This is where new Christians are baptised
Hanging Light - There are normally three types in Anglican tradition.
A white one that hangs over the aumbry(as above), a red one that normally
hangs in the sanctuary. This reminds us of all those who have given their
life for Jesus and were martyred. A blue one (normally in a small chapel).
The chapel is called the 'lady chapel' and is dedicated in memory of Jesus
mother Mary.
Lectern - This is where the bible is read from. Some are plain
and others have an eagle standing on a ball with its claws around the
ball. This reminds us that the eagle flies the highest of all birds (Bible
is held the highest). The most powerful of all birds (Bible is most powerful
word). Claws around the ball representing the world. This reminds us that
as the bible is spread around the world.
