Heaven

Belief in God who provides for us

Reading: John 14: 1-12

• What is Heaven? Discuss
• Where do you think Heaven is? Discuss
• In pictorial language - It is easy for children to believe that Heaven in 'up there'
• Recently James went on a flight from Melbourne to Queensland and when he looked out of the plane windows he saw he was higher than the clouds and yet he still couldn't see God or any of the angels.
• That is because they are a real long way away.
• Let me demonstrate for you. (Have a set of keys or any object that the children can see, touch, feel etc. Then move it to the opposite end of the church and so can you see it.
• Obviously the answer is No!. Then say to them, but do you believe the keys(etc) are actually there? Yes they should say.
• Heaven is like this. It is a place that is light years (explain) away.
• In 1972, NASA launched an exploratory space probe called Pioneer 10. The mission of Pioneer 10 was to fly to Jupiter and take pictures of the planet and moons. After Pioneer 10 completed its mission in November of 1973, it continued to travel into space. By 1997, the probe had traveled ten billion kilometers from the sun. In spite of the great distance, scientists are still able to pick up radio signals from the probe that they can still decipher. What is more remarkable than that, is these signals are sent by an 8-watt transmitter, which is only as powerful as a night light, and it takes the signal nine hours to get to earth. (Do a demonstration)
• If you think that is amazing, just imagine how amazing God really is. After all, he created all the planets.
• The important thing about Heaven, which is far far away, is that God can come to you when you call, faster than you can blink your eye.(Demonstrate)
• But also remember that Heaven is a wonderful place, where no-one is ever hungry, there are no fights only love, no one has any diseases or in pain or ever sad.
• When we love Jesus in this life by coming to church, saying our prayers, saying grace at meals or helping someone in need, you are showing you love Jesus
• Then when you eventually die(as we all have to), you will go to heaven because hat is what God promises to those who love him.

Kids Church Activity:
Focus on explaining Heaven. To make a heaven collage. Whilst “Heaven up there” is not theologically accurate, children think in picture language. Talk about the loss of their cat or dog or a loved one (relative or friend) that won’t return in the flesh, but spirit/soul (needs explanation) returns to be with God.

What you need to get ready:
A4 size card, houses etc on bottom, clouds made from cotton wool, pearly gates above the clouds. (optional depending on your theology), punch to make holes, wool to make sheet into a hanging
