Emmaus

Christians are recognised in their actions

Reading: Luke 24: 13-35

• How do you feel if someone you know walks past you and ignores you? (Discuss)
• But it may be because they didn't recognise you.
• What could be different about you that might make a person not recognise you? (Discuss)
• My grandson was with his Dad whilst his Mum went to the hairdresser. The family were going to a wedding. When she returned, she was so different (Hair colour change, real curly hair was straightened, went out and bought a new outfit for the wedding.
• In fact Matthew & his son were waiting out the front of the shop when Andrea came out and walked past them both and neither of them recognised her because the change was so dramatic.
• Eventually Matthew recognised Andea and said to Connor - There is your Mum. He looked and said no its not.
• It was only after she spoke that Connor recognised her. He recognised her voice.
• In today's story, the disciples were walking with Jesus and somehow did not recognise him either as he was somehow different.
• It was only when he stayed and had a meal with them, and broke the bread and blessed the wine, that they recognised him by what he did.
• That is the way it is with us as Christians.
• We are recognised as Friends of Jesus when we do nice things for others.
• We can say we are Christians, but when we actually do something kind and considerate, people see we are different from others in the world.

• We can show we are a friend of Jesus in the way we speak and the was we act (Explain)

Kids Church Activity:
To focus on the fact that in the breaking of the bread, the disciples recognised Jesus. DAS special molding clay (a special mixtures of play dough and clay). To make a chalice. Children are always curious about the communion bread. The priest could talk about that and give them a wafer that is not consecrated to try. The chalice would air dry and become solid in about 3 days. An alternate would be a plastic wine glass (Champagne glass would be taller) that the children could decorate with stickers. Place in a cardboard holder together with a small soup roll and print on holder “Jesus was recognised by his actions”

What you need to get ready:
DAS clay or plastic wine glass and stickers, soup rolls, cardboard holders (these could be obtained from MacDonalds or Hungry Jack outlets. Often they are happy to be supportive in this way. Slogan on self-adhesive paper or on paper, which is glued on holder, textas, scissors
