Humility

Today's selected readings: – Mark 10: 35-45

• Do you know what being big headed means? (Discuss)
• cf: Eddie McGuire from Collingwood football team. There are those who believe is big headed when in fact he has to suffer the tall poppy syndrome (Explain)
• In fact, many are just jealous about what he has achieved.
As he says, you can take the Broadmeadows man out of Broadmeadows, but you can't take the Broardy out of the man. In other words, we value our roots where we came from.
• It is one thing to know you are good at something (eg. Sport, school work etc). It is another to go around bragging about how good you are.
• Being humble is about knowing you have done well, but not bragging about it so it makes other people second rate.
• The cricket in this last week is such an example. Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden who created history with a world record of 380 runs, betting the old record of 375 runs.
• When he was interviewed, he didn't say how terrific he was. Rather he said he was able to do that because of the great support in the Australian team. He was humble.
• In today's story James and John wanted to sit in the best seats especially next to Jesus
• But Jesus virtually goes on to ask if they are sure they are worthy of the best seats. Jesus says - 'How serious are you about being a follower of mine'?
• No one likes people who are full of themselves (Explain). If we want to get on in life, we need to understand and practice humility.
• After all - we are all equal and valued in the eyes of Jesus.
