• In today's reading Jesus is saying that no matter what we do
in life, there will always be fights and squabbles
• How many of you have a brother or sister who is a real pain? (Comment)
• But the real test comes when your sister or brother is picked
upon, or bashed by a bully. That is the time when you have to decide to
defend your sister or brother or not.
• My guess would be that when the chips are down, you would always
come to their rescue.
• If you come from a truly Christian family, where Mum and Dad both
come to church with you, it is unlikely there will be arguments over religion.
• But in many families where there is not this sense of togetherness,
often arguments come up over religion.
• Jesus is saying in todays reading, 'my task is to bring about
disagreement'. In other words to get people to make a decision to be part
of his family or not.
• In some ways it is like following a football team. There are many
arguments about which team is the best, often rubbishing a friend because
they follow a different team.
• Some times it is like this with the various different churches
in our area of which one is best.
• The truth is, it doesn't matter so long as one belongs to a church
family and is supported by them.
• Jesus says there will always be arguments amongst people, so long
as in the end you made a decision one way or the other.
• Making a decision to be a Jesus friend is one that you have made
and for that he says "Thanks"
