"Some Disciples desert Jesus as his expectations become too hard."

Today's selected readings: – John 6: 59-69

• What is the hardest thing you have had to do and achieved? (Discuss)
• What is something you have tried and it was just too hard and you gave up? (Discuss)
• One of the dangers of just giving in and not trying harder is we may never reach our God given potential
• But just think if those things you thought you could not do, thought of a way to achieve them, and then how did you feel at the end? (Discuss)
• Nothing that is worthwhile in this world we live in comes without some effort on our part.
• In the morning when you are to head off to school, you just take it for granted that Mum will have clothes washed and iron for you. That there will be food in the cupboard and fridge for breakfast and to make lunches.
• As you get older and leave home to get married or to work some distance from home you won't have Mum or Dad there to prepare these things.
• It will be a matter of do them yourself - Go to the supermarket, wash and iron your clothes etc
• Then the time will come when you have your own children - Sleepless nights, perky/pooey kids, demanding etc. If you really love your children, then you somehow manage the strength to survive.
• Sadly there are others who find the task too hard, sometimes it is because a Mum is doing all this on her own, and says I don't want to do this anymore.
• She says, I no longer can be with my friends, I only stay at home and look after kids, I am going to let someone else look after the children as I don't want to do it any more. It is too hard.
• This is what the story we read today is also about
• People wanted to be a friend of Jesus, but when they found out that it meant having to make a commitment they did not want to do, they deserted him as it was too hard.
• Just imaging how sad Jesus felt.
• That is how he feel when people refuse to come to church, or to talk to him as they say their prayers
• Remember - When we don't say our prayers each night or refuse to come to church to be with God's extended families, we too are deserting Jesus as well.
• So let us make sure we never ignore Jesus - Worship, Prayer etc will ensure we don't

Kids Church Activity:
To make a card with a pull in and out piece that stresses the two aspects of being a friend of Jesus. Those who want to be with him and those who desert him. Stress that apathy is just as bad as too are those who leave the church because they feel too much is being expected of them.

What you need to get ready:
A5 sheet of car with figure of Jesus on card with speaking balloons with Jesus saying "Do you want to go away too?" Figure of child walking away and another saying "I want to stay with you Jesus"
