Preparing for a visit

Preparing the Way

Readings: Matthew 11: 2-11

To stress the need to prepare for the invitation to a special event. First to prepare the way (Like John the Baptist) in sending out an invitation.

Then to follow this up with a personal visit or phone call to their friend.

• What happens when you go visiting friends? Do you just drop in or might you ring first? Discuss
• If you don't make arrangements first, there is a good chance the people you want to visit won't be home.
• Now I am sure there have been times when you have been sent on a message to get something.
• It may be to the local shop, or it may just be to go and get a certain screwdriver or hammer for Dad
• Being sent on a message can happen in a variety of ways
• Eg: If you wanted to visit a family member or a friend how might you send them the message? Discuss
• Phone, Letter, Email etc
• Now in the days of Jesus, none of these facilities were available
• How did John the Baptist become the messenger that announced the coming of Jesus? Discuss
• He did it face to face. He invited people to come to know about Jesus who was soon to come.
• Today it is much easier for all of us in the ways we have already spoken about
• Your task today is to think of a special person you would like to invite to come to the Christmas Lighting Festival this week, or to the Family Service on Christmas Eve.
• The letter/invitation you will send to them will pave the way for when you actually talk to them and ask if they will accept your invitation.

• In this way you will be like John the Baptist. A messenger for Jesus.
