All Saints - The Disciples

All Saints Day

Power point presentation of the disciples included (278k)

Today's selected reading: Luke 6: 12-16

Kid's Talk

• Have you ever had an experience at school where everyone is lined up and two captains are chosen to pick teams
• Then one by one each Captain chooses a person and you just hope that you will soon be chosen.
• Sometimes the captain chooses you when you would rather be on the other team and you feel a little disappointed.
• Jesus, as we read in the readings today decided that he needed a team to help him with God's work
• He then chose twelve men (Show the Power point)
• Just imagine how they would have felt to have been chosen by Jesus. Very special I am sure.
• You and I, because we are Christians and part of God's family in this place, are also seen by Jesus as special
• He wants us to be like the disciples, and to tell other people how he also loves them.
• But also he wants us to do the same work as his disciples did.
• When we invite a friend to come to church, we are doing just that
• So what about next week. This is a great opportunity as it is our annual Teddy Bear's Picnic Service
• Invite a friend to come with you, and Jesus will look over to you and smile because he can see you are truly one of his special followers. A special disciple.

Kids Church Activity:
Each child to make a different hanging of one of the disciples. That child is also to explain why the disciple they made a crest for is a saint. Eg: What person did, did they die for their faith, how did they die, is there anything special about what they did?

What you need to get ready:

Pre-cut crest backs made from very thick cardboard or better still, light masconite or thin chipboard. The crest to be pre-painted into the correct background colour. Make crest two dimensional with various materials like cloth, shells, etc. Crests to be of – Peter, Philip, John, Simon the Zealot, Jude, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the Greater, Judas, Andrew, James the Less. You could also add Matthias.

Andrew  (Was crucified on an X shaped cross)

Bartholomew - Missionary work in India - He was killed with knives
(Actually flayed (had his skin peeled from him) - Not a good sight for kids.

James the Great - The 1st of the disciples to go on a missionary journey. The shells refer to a pilgrimage

James the less - Cast down from the pinnacle of the temple and sawn in two

John (He was offered a poisoned chalice in an attempt on his life
Judas - Rope symbolises how he hanged himself

Jude  (Ship to symbolise the many missionary journeys he undertook and the various ports he called into

Matthew - Money changer

Matthias - Missionary in Judea and was beheaded

Peter - Jesus told him he would give him the keys to heaven

Philip    - Loaves of bread

Simon -Was a fisher of men and very enthusiastic about the word of God

Thomas - Built a church in East India. Square reminds us he was a builder and the spear that he was killed with.
